Fax facilities on the move can be a real boon, and the convenience of being able to send and receive faxes is a major plus for many travelling workers.
Of course, you may not always choose to have a computer with fax and data software plugged into your phone as you go about, so a fax mailbox may be a vital accompaniment. A fax mailbox works like an answer phone for incoming faxes, where they are stored until you are ready to accept them.
Vodafone offers this service, and you don't have to have a Vodafone to use it. Delrina (of Winfax fame) also offer a fax mailbox. In fact I think there is a link between the two companies providing this. Both cost about 10 pounds per month.
Orange offer fax facilities on the existing voicemail system, with SMS notification of faxes and other nice features. It is charged as the Orange answer phone (voicemail) system, so you can simply divert all faxes to "FaxMail" and be told of their arrival by SMS, which tells you the Fax ID of the sender, and the number of pages. You ring the answerphone, and tell it where to send ("print") the fax to.
Before this was available, what I did was to divert incoming fax calls to the nearest convenient fax machine. It worked well, and is free. I diverted "on busy" or "not answered" so that I knew to collect my fax from the appropriate fax machine, and sometimes divert them to my PC at home, from where I could retrieve them by polling.
There is another way: you can set up an 0870 (national rate) number for free, and this serves as a fax number. All faxes sent to it are automatically forwarded as a graphic to the email address you specify. This is all free from http://www.faxme.co.uk/ and it works a treat! You can also get a similar free service from http://www.x-stream.co.uk/ which also does voicemail (emailing you a .wav file) but I've found this slightly less fast and reliable.
